1904 Washington Monument Association bronze medal, struck by the U.S. Mint to commemorate the centenary of George Washington’s death.
On the front, a portrait of George Washington with the inscription:
“Struck by order of Congress to commemorate the centenary of Washington’s death.” It also identifies the Washington Monument Association, Alexandria, Virginia .
The reverse shows a laurel wreath with a theodolite at the center and the inscription:
“Washington 1749” and “Surveyed Alexandria.”
The design refers to Washington’s early work as a surveyor, his first public office before his military and political career.
