In the late 1830s the English invented a type of porcelain called Parian. It is a substitute for marble and in many cases is indistinguishable from it, capturing the color and texture.

This piece is rare. This same piece was offered recently in London for the equivalent of $2,500. The product page has an audio clip of the dealer explaining the statue, and it's worth listening to if you're interested in this piece.

The one we have has a small chip from the base, and a very small chip from the left elbow. That one is not noticeable, and if desired the base could be repaired by someone who specializes in porcelain, but I would be inclined to enjoy it exactly as it is.
