About Gen. John J. Pershing
As commander of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in World War I, John J. Pershing (1860–1948) insisted on an independent U.S. force, leading American troops to key victories at Saint-Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne, helping secure the Allied victory. He became the first officer promoted to General of the Armies, the highest U.S. military rank, and later modernized the Army as Chief of Staff.
