Life of George Washington, Illustrated Edition, 5 Volumes (1857) by Washington Irving. Published by G.P. Putnam & Co., New York, 1857.

This five-volume set is an extensive biography of George Washington by Washington Irving, published in 1857. The illustrated edition features numerous steel-engraved plates that enhance the narrative with visual depictions of the Revolutionary War, Washington, his generals, and his home.

The set is bound in 3/4 black leather with maroon cloth boards. The spines are divided into six compartments with gilt titles and decorative elements. This set is an ex-library copy, featuring labels on the lower spine, a stamp inside the cover, and a small label on the spine.

It was once owned by J. Clarence Davies (1868-1934), a leading New York real estate businessman who primary dealt in Bronx properties, earning him the nickname “the King of the Bronx” from his colleagues. He was a civic leader who served on many public and charitable committees, and was also one of the foremost collectors of visual records of New York City’s past.

I believe the earlier owner, whose name appears in the volumes, was the grand daughter of a Revolutionary War general.

Volumes in this set:

  • Volume 1: Covers Washington's early life and initial military career. Features numerous steel-engraved plates illustrating scenes from his youth, early military endeavors, and key figures from this period. 504pp.

  • Volume 2: Focuses on Washington's involvement in the French and Indian War. Illustrated with plates depicting significant battles, Washington’s comrades, and maps of strategic locations. 518pp.

  • Volume 3: Chronicles the events leading up to the American Revolution, with engravings showing the political climate, Washington’s leadership, and his interactions with other revolutionary leaders. Note: This volume has a crack at the lower hinge and a black stain in the margins from page 307 onwards. 523pp.

  • Volume 4: Details the Revolutionary War period. The plates include battle scenes, portraits of Washington and his generals, and depictions of key moments in the war. 518pp.

  • Volume 5: Covers Washington's presidency and later years. Illustrated with engravings of Washington's presidential activities, his family, and his estate at Mount Vernon. 456pp.

This biography is a detailed and richly illustrated account of George Washington's life, providing both historical facts and engaging narratives. It remains a valuable resource for understanding the life and legacy of America's first president.

Overall, the set is in good condition with some signs of wear, especially on the edges. Volume 3 has a notable crack at the lower hinge and a black stain in the margins from page 307 onwards. The bindings and pages are generally well-preserved, with some rubbing at the edges.
