This extraordinary item is one of a kind.
While the maker is not known, this isn't folk art, but a beautifully made piece that is deeply meaningful.
The scroll at the top has the date the Emancipation Proclamation and it is breaking the chains shown on either side. There is a pen slipped through the scroll at the top and above that, a crown or wreath of laurel leaves.
At the bottom, a crest and flags depicting the Union.
I have never seen anything like this. Really beautifully made. Deeply meaningful. The frame is in very good condition. The mirror shows the same effects of age that all antique mirrors show. I will be happy to replace it before we send it, if you would like. It currently has the original mirror, which is in "okay" shape, but to use it as a mirror, you'll want to replace it.
