Full title: The Northern Pacific Tour. From the Lakes & Mississippi River to the Pacific including Puget Sound & Alaska. Published in St. Paul, Minn. by W.C. Riley in 1888.

The 1888 Northern Pacific Tour panoramic is a rare oblong-format promotional album issued by W.C. Riley in St. Paul, documenting the Northern Pacific Railways route from the upper Midwest to the Pacific Coast and Alaska.

Containing 74 lithographic views spread across 29 continuous accordion-fold pages, this edition presents urban, industrial, and natural scenes associated with one of the most significant transcontinental lines of the late 19th century.

The accordion-style structure allowed for an extended visual presentation while maintaining a compact form. Examples with all 29 panels present are uncommon, as many were either disassembled or damaged due to the formats fragility, and ours, as you can see, is in excellent condition.

Views include cities such as Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco, along with landscapes from the Yellowstone region, Alaskan glaciers, Crow people encampments, and Western mining camps.

The lithographs, captioned beneath each view, emphasize both settlement growth and geographical landmarks across the Northern Pacific corridor.

Depictions of Indigenous encampments and frontier towns are seldom reproduced in later pictorial works.
