Full title: Souvenir and Official Programme of the Centennial Celebration of George Washington’s Inauguration as First President of the United States , compiled and edited by John Alden. Published in New York by Garnett & Gow in 1889.
Records the events organized around April 30, 1889, marking 100 years since Washington took the oath of office as the first President of the United States. The program includes details on the exhibitions, naval parade, concert, ball, banquet, religious services, and other public events held for the commemoration.
The contents include chapters devoted to the official program, followed by a constitutional history section. Later chapters include profiles of the signers of the Constitution and the presidential administrations from Washington through Harrison, with engraved portraits.
The book also includes a frontispiece portrait of George Washington and a large number of period advertisements. The ads cover late-19th-century goods and services including watches, newspapers, insurance, fountain pens, sewing machines, and other commercial offerings. Many are illustrated.
As shown, while there is some discoloration on the cover, the inside pages are in excellent condition.
