Note that we only have Volume I.
Written and published during the war, this would have been read as news rather than history. With Abbott's colorful narrative style, it reads like a lively popular account. Extremely detailed, with many maps, diagrams, portraits, and battle scenes.
The full title: The History of the Civil War in America; Comprising a Full and Impartial Account of the Origin and Progress of the Rebellion, of the various Naval and Military Engagements, of the Heroic Deeds Performed by Armies and Individuals, and of the Touching Scenes in the Field, the Camp, the Hospital, and the Cabin.

Abbott, a renowned 19th-century historian and author, meticulously chronicles the complex political, social, and military events that led up to and encompassed the initial years of the conflict.
Volume I covers the period from the roots of sectional tensions through the outbreak of war and the significant battles and campaigns that defined the early struggle between the Union and the Confederacy.
