World’s Columbian Exposition Illustrated, Published in Chicago by J. B. Campbell.
Two issues available:
- August 1892, Vol. II, No. 6.
- September 1892, Vol. II, No. 7.
Published the year before the opening of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, this issue provides a contemporary record of the preparations for the fair.
The periodical was published by James B. Campbell beginning before the Exposition and documented its planning, construction, participants, buildings, exhibits, and related events through illustrations and contemporary reporting.
The striking front wrapper features a large portrait of Christopher Columbus between the dates 1492 and 1892, beneath the masthead “Authentic World’s Fair Information.”
Inside are numerous illustrations, portraits, advertisements, and photographic reproductions relating to the preparations for the Exposition.
Among the subjects pictured are monumental sculptures intended for the Administration Building, including figures representing Art, Commerce, Abundance, and Blacksmith.
Of particular interest are the many contemporary advertisements throughout the issue. They include advertisements for the Singer Manufacturing Co., Fargo footwear, Davis Sewing Machine Co., and other businesses, giving the issue additional value as a snapshot of American commerce and advertising in 1892.
The back wrapper features a large view of the publication's Chicago offices at 159 and 161 Adams Street and promotes the periodical as an illustrated guide to the forthcoming Exposition.
