About the newspaper front pages: Each box here includes five front pages, mostly from the Chicago Daily Tribune. These are only the front pages and some have wear to include some tears. They are included to convey what it was like at the time. There are front pages covering a range of dates in each group, including some from before the United States was involved.
About the books
- If you are an aviation buff, take a close look at Boxes 20, 21, and 22 because they include the Restricted WWII Aircraft Recognition Pictorial Manual, which covers the planes of the Unite States, Britain, Germany, Italy, the Soviet Union, and Japan. We've included several photos of the manual, which is excellent. (These boxes are more expensive because these are original manuals.)
- If you are interested in the Army and ground combat, look at Boxes 14, 15, 16, and 17, which include excellent and highly detailed books from the Center of Military History from the US Army. These should be especially appealing to adults who want to understand the details of what happened. In three cases (Boxes 15, 16, and 17), it's specific battles, and those books have several fold out maps in the back. For Box 14, which also includes a small, colorful, and excellent publication on D-Day, the book is The Ordnance Department on Beachhead and Battlefront. While much attention is paid to the landing and battling to get off the beaches and through the hedgerows, logistics was critically important, and made more challenging since everything had to come in by ship. It's claimed by some that Omar Bradley said, “Amateurs talk tactics, professionals study logistics." (The earliest verifiable written record of this quote comes from General Robert H. Barrow, former Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, in a 1979 newspaper interview:
"Amateurs talk about strategy and tactics. Professionals talk about logistics and sustainability in warfare.") This books covers the entirety of World War II. - Each box includes one or more enthusiast publications showing subs, tanks, planes, and ships "in action." These are suitable for both children and adults.
- Two books include large format publications, front pages from the New York Times (Box 18) and an excellent atlas that covers the entire war around the globe, including many regions that don't get much attention (Box 19).
