Featuring a golden eagle carrying the U.S. flag with the banner “Victory Forever.”

The eagle grips a bundle of arrows and stands above a shield in the colors of the flag, with golden rays extending from its outstretched wings.

Along the rays are the dates 1776, 1812, 1848, ’61–’65, and 1898, marking America’s major conflicts from the Revolution through the Spanish–American War. See the Historical Background below for more on the 46-star flag and the conflicts.

Historic background

The 46-star flag was official from July 4, 1908 with Oklahoma's admission as the 46th state on November 16, 1907, until July 3, 1912 and the admission of New Mexico and Arizona. (The Flag Act of April 4, 1818 established that our flag would have 13 stripes and that new stars were added on the 4th of July following a state's admission.)

The dates on the flag represent these wars

  • 1776—Signing of the Declaration of Independence, with the American Revolution beginning April 19, 1775 at Lexington and Concord and ending on September 3, 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris

  • 1812—The War of 1812 began with James Madison signing the declaration of war on June 18, 1812. The conflict ended with the ratification of the Treaty of Ghent on February 17, 1815.

  • 1848—The Mexican-American War began with border skirmishes in Texas on April 25, 1846 and ended and with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on February 2, 1848

  • 1861 - 1865—The Civil War began with the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 and largely concluded with the surrender of major Confederate armies in April 1865, although the last engagement occurred in Texas on May 13, 1865.

  • 1898—Spanish-American War began on April 21 with the U.S. blockade of Cuba and ended on December 10 with the 1898 Treaty of Paris.
