This is from the same book as the famous chart, "The Rise and Fall of American Political Parties and Administrations from 1789 to 1880" chart, which we offer reproduced at its original size of 12 3/4" x 55 1/8" (each of two prints, which make up the entire chart).
This chart shows Federal revenue and expenditures and covers the years 1789 - 1880.
- The middle graphic, in pink, which balloons toward the bottom of the page is "Public Debt." The large increase coincides with the Civil War.
- The major source of revenue, in yellow, is "Customs."
- There are other sources of revenue we don't think of today, including "Postage" and "Public Lands." I assume the latter is from the sale of land.
- The expenditure categories on the left side are labeled Army, Navy, Pensions, Civil, Indians, Foreign, Misc., Premium on Public Debt, Principal on Public Debt, and Interest on Public Debt.
It would make an interesting piece framed in the office of anyone who deals with taxes or policy at the Federal level, or in a classroom dealing with the history of finance.
I was considering offering this chart and decided not to. (This is the only copy and we don't plan to offer it. If you think we should and would definitely buy a copy, let me know.)
