Hardcover (496 pages), brand new and signed by the author, Robert P. J. Cooney, Jr. Published by the American Graphic Press.

Named One of the “Five Best Books” on the Subject by The Wall Street Journal

"Documents women's long, historic fight for political recognition. Beautifully designed and richly illustrated, this distinctive First Edition features more than 960 historic photographs and illustrations that bring the movement alive. Winning the Vote shows how women have long been active participants in American history and how they became politically powerful even without their right to vote.

"Praised for its historical coverage and accuracy, Winning the Vote presents the woman suffrage movement clearly and chronologically, with emphasis on the remarkable personalities and turbulent political campaigns of the early 20th century. Large format photographs and vibrant images expand on a fast-paced text highlighting key developments between 1848 and 1920. The book covers in detail the many electoral campaigns suffragists organized in the states, along with the dramatic final drive for the 19th Amendment."

About the author:

For more than 35 years, Robert P. J. Cooney, Jr. has studied the historic drive of American women to win their right to vote. After attending Santa Clara University in California, he joined the staff of the Institute for the Study of Nonviolence in Palo Alto, where he designed and co-edited The Power of the People: Active Nonviolence in the United States (Peace Press, 1977). This illustrated history traced nonviolent movements and philosophy throughout U.S. history from before William Penn to after Martin Luther King, Jr. and awakened his interest in the woman suffrage movement.

Moving to Point Reyes Station, he began Robert Cooney Graphic Design and created books, publications, and special projects for individual writers and artists as well as commercial and non-profit clients over the years. In 1993, he began research for a photographic history of the suffrage movement and visited or corresponded with dozens of major libraries and historical societies across the country. He also started the Woman Suffrage Media Project to coordinate and further efforts to help popularize this overlooked part of America's story.

A recipient of a research grant from The Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America at Harvard, he served as a consultant on several suffrage-related books, publications, and films, including the PBS documentaries One Woman, One Vote and Not for Ourselves Alone. After 12 years of work, he published Winning the Vote: The Triumph of the American Woman Suffrage Movement (American Graphic Press, 2005), which is full of facts and nearly 1,000 images documenting women's early political involvement. The book received glowing reviews and was recommended as an essential resource for the nation's public and school libraries. He was honored with the Write Women Back Into History Award from the National Women's History Project in recognition of his work uncovering this central and inspiring chapter in American history.

Mr. Cooney has spoken at the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. Constitution Center, and the Library of Congress, emphasizing in particular the successful nonviolent grassroots campaigns suffragists waged between 1910 and 1920. In 2015, he edited Remembering Inez: The Last Campaign of Inez Milholland, Suffrage Martyr, in part to draw more interest in the movement among younger readers.

During 2019–2021, Mr. Cooney actively promoted the suffrage centennial celebration with the National Women’s History Alliance, publishing gazettes, catalogs, and newsletters promoting the centennial and efforts in every state. He served on the Board of the Women’s Vote Centennial Initiative and supervised the publication of the honorary book A Vote for Women. He has served as Vice Chair of the National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites, helped design the stations at the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial, and is on the Board of the Suffrage Educational Institute. He is also on the Advisory Board of the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation, which is planning a permanent memorial on the national mall to honor women’s historic movement for political independence.
