Large 49-Star American Flag in use for only one year — Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot

Large 49-Star American Flag in use for only one year — Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot

Updated on October 9, 2025: This has been sold.

Officially adopted on July 4, 1959, this new 49-star flag marked the first change to the U.S. flag in 47 years. More than 600 different designs were submitted by the public, and the design eventually selected—seven staggered rows of seven stars—was chosen by President Eisenhower.

The 49-star flag was used for exactly one year, until July 4, 1960, when a 50th star was added to represent Hawaii. Like all changes following the 1818 Flag Act, the new design took effect on the first Independence Day after a state's admission.

As shown in the photos, in very good condition. With sewn stars and stripes and brass grommets.

The markings indicate Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot.

This article from the Army Quartermaster Foundation describes the history behind the design and creation of the 49-star flag.

Size: 5' x 9'6"

Shipping: $25. Please allow one week for shipping.
