Full title: A Tramp Abroad by Mark Twain, (Samuel L.Clemens). Published in Hartford, Connecticut by the American Publishing Company in 1880. 631pp.
The American Publishing Company was the primary subscription-book publisher for Clemens.
This is a first edition, second state, and it is in excellent condition in every respect.
What is meant by "Second state"?
Due to high demand, when the first printing run sold out, the publisher ran a second print and there are minor differences, such as the caption under the engraving in this edition changed to "Titian's Moses".
The book chronicles Clemens's extended journey through Germany, Switzerland, and the Alps with the wit, satire, and observational humor that made Twain one of America’s defining literary voices. Part travel memoir, part social commentary, and part comic adventure, the work blends real experiences with exaggerated storytelling in his classic fashion.
This 1880 edition was sold by subscription only and contains an impressive 328 illustrations by W. Fr. Brown, True Williams, B. Day, and others, along with several illustrations created by Twain himself “without outside help,” as humorously noted on the title page.
