Military appointment, with Andrew Jackson’s name printed at the top and a large, strong signature from him, is for a “passed midshipman.” It’s a rank that was in use from 1819 - 1862 and recognized a midshipman who had successfully completed his exams and was awaiting promotion. (Thanks to Martin, a good friend of The History List, for his help with this.) The appointment, dated June 14, 1834 is also signed by the Secretary of the Navy and has the Navy's seal in the upper left hand corner. It is in very good condition and beautifully framed.
