“The Sniper” — WWII Camp Newspapers of the 90th Infantry Division (3 Issues)
Three single-sheet camp newspapers titled The Sniper, produced by soldiers of the 90th Infantry Division—the “Fighting 90th”—while in Germany during the closing months of the Second World War.
Printed in crude typewriter text with occasional hand-drawn illustrations, these sheets reflect the immediacy of wartime reporting at the unit level.
- December 31, 1944 — featuring a bold illustration of a large “V” crushing a swastika, with reports on American advances into Rochefort, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge
- January 31, 1945 — including coverage of a speech attributed to Adolf Hitler, reported under the headline “I’m Germany’s Saviour”
- Undated “Sunday Supplement” — with stark battlefield accounts, including reports of sniper actions and descriptions of heavy casualties, referencing fighting on the Western Front
The 90th Infantry Division landed in England in April 1944, entered combat shortly after D-Day at Utah Beach, and went on to fight across France, including actions along the Saar River before being drawn into operations during the Ardennes offensive.
These newspapers show expected wear, with toning and handling consistent with field-produced material.
A rare survival of informal wartime journalism—capturing how soldiers recorded events, victories, and losses as they experienced them.
