Wedgwood transferware plate featuring the Bennington Battle Monument, flanked by oval portraits of John Stark and Ethan Allen.
Around the border are additional Vermont and Revolutionary War-related scenes, including Catamount Tavern 1767, State Arms House 1780, and Ethan Allen’s House.
The back of the plate is marked Wedgwood, Etruria, England, and Made in England for James Wood, Bennington, Vermont.
It also includes the Jones, McDuffee & Stratton importer’s mark and a printed reference to the Bennington Battle Monument, erected 1887 - 1891.
The back inscription includes Gen. John Stark’s well-known line from the Battle of Bennington:
“There are the redcoats; they are ours, or Molly Stark sleeps a widow tonight.”
