The book begins in 1940, during Churchill’s first months as Prime Minister, and follows him through the Second World War, his fall from power, his return to office, his later years, and his death. Moran records Churchill’s work habits, health, moods, private conversations, and relationships with major wartime and postwar figures.

The contents include sections on Churchill during the war, his dealings with Roosevelt and Stalin, the strain of wartime leadership, his defeat in 1945, his return to No. 10, the Suez period, and his final years.
