Spectacular fan from the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.

The fan is hand painted and features colorful imagery on both sides. One side displays crossed American flags beneath a spread-wing American eagle clutching fasces and an American shield emblazoned with the words, “100 Years”

The reverse depicts the exhibition’s Main Building along with scenes from the fairgrounds and commemorative banners marked “1776” and “1876.”

The fan retains its original wooden sticks and is stamped:

“Patented May [ ]th, 1875 / Registered June 5th, 1875”
