1876 U.S. Mint Independence Centennial Medals

Pair of 1876 U.S. Mint Independence Centennial medals, issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of American independence.

One side shows a central allegorical figure standing above the date 1876, holding laurel wreaths out toward figures representing the arts, industry, and learning. Around her are symbols of American achievement, including a shield, tools, a gear, and an artist’s palette. The inscription reads: “In Commemoration of the Hundredth Anniversary of American Independence” and “Act of Congress June 1874.”

The reverse shows a seated female figure beneath rays of light, with the date 1776 below. The inscription reads: “These United Colonies Are, and of Right Ought to Be, Free and Independent States.”
