This Wedgwood "Constitution and Java" platter, designed by the celebrated marine artist George C. Wales, commemorates the famous naval battle between the USS Constitution and the HMS Java during the War of 1812.
The detailed scene on the plate captures the intense moment when the USS Constitution, also known as "Old Ironsides," engaged the British frigate HMS Java off the coast of Brazil on December 29, 1812. The battle ended in a decisive victory for the American ship, further solidifying its legendary status.
