About the Grand Army of the Republic

The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization of Union veterans from the Civil War, including members of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. Founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois, it grew to thousands of local posts across the North and West, serving as a powerful voice for veterans and their families. The organization formally dissolved in 1956 following the death of its last member, Albert Woolson.
