Subjects include Stonehenge and prehistoric sites, castles, cathedrals, stained-glass windows, coronation thrones, sculpture, regalia, and national symbols.

The set includes 40 color engravings, with 18 in Volume I and 22 in Volume II, along with hundreds of black-and-white engravings throughout the text. Illustrations include architectural views, cathedral interiors, historic city scenes, and works of art, including the statue of Isaac Newton at Cambridge.
