Very rare limited edition that includes “a genuine piece of the framework of the original hull of the U.S. Frigate CONSTITUTION.”  The book and the piece of wood are in excellent condition.

Full title: The Frigate Constitution And Other Historic Ships By F. Alexander Magoun. Published in Salem, Massachusetts by the Marine Research Society in 1928. First edition. Number 23 of 97.

Limited to just 97 copies, of which only 87 were offered for sale. This is number 23. (A volume from a larger run, without the wood and the tipped in print is also available.)

Included in the volume is the original 1927 typed certification letter from the Boston Navy Yard confirming that the wood mounted to the front cover is “a genuine piece of the framework of the original hull of the U.S. Frigate CONSTITUTION.” The letter is signed by Rear Admiral Philip Andrews, Commandant of the Navy Yard, and specifically references its use in the special edition of Magoun’s The Frigate Constitution and Other Historic Ships.

Also present is the limitation page noting that the volume was printed on Bruce Rogers All Rag Paper and identifying this as copy number 23 of the 97 copies produced.

An original fragment from the framework of the hull of the USS Constitution is mounted to the front cover within the decorative inset panel. The wood fragment remains intact with no noted chipping or losses.

There is a also a high-quality photographic print tipped in that is suitable for framing.
