1776 Gentleman's Magazine for October and Supplement for the Year 1776, with folding map Illustrating the late Engagement in Long Island

The Gentleman's Magazine or Monthly Intelligencer was an English periodical that first appeared in 1731. It was published without interruption for nearly 200 years and was the first of its kind to use the term magazine. Published by Edward Cave, pseud. Sylvanus Urban.

We have the October 1776 issue of and the supplement for 1776. The October issue includes the folding map titled “Sketch of the Country Illustrating the late Engagement in Long Island," which is in excellent condition.

The October 1776 issue includes contemporary British coverage of the American Revolution, including material on American affairs and the Battle of Long Island. The title page notes that the issue is “illustrated with a Map of Long Island,” showing the landing of the King’s troops, the enemy’s route, and the area around New York, King’s Bridge, Staten Island, New Jersey, Brooklyn, Jamaica, Flatlands, and the western end of Long Island.

The folding map, “Sketch of the Country Illustrating the late Engagement in Long Island,” is one of the most desirable Revolutionary War maps issued in The Gentleman’s Magazine. It depicts New York Harbor and the surrounding region shortly after the Battle of Long Island, including New Jersey, Staten Island, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island, and Long Island Sound.

Also included is the Supplement for the Year 1776, which contains a historical account of the principal events of the late campaign in New York and Canada.

Note the condition issues in the photos of both, including that the supplement has separated into two parts.
