Congress selected Bancroft, the American historian and statesman, to deliver the official eulogy for Lincoln less than one year after the President’s assassination. The address was given in the House of Representatives at Washington and published the same year by the Government Printing Office.

The volume includes Bancroft’s address on Lincoln’s life and character, along with an appendix containing Congressional proceedings and letters issued after the news of Lincoln’s death in 1865.
