This anthology examines the rise of Nazi Germany, Hitler’s dictatorship, and the political, social, and institutional changes that reshaped Germany under National Socialism.

Revised and edited by Allan Mitchell of the University of California, San Diego, this third edition updates an anthology first edited in 1959 by John L. Snell, with previous editions published in 1959 and 1973.

This revised edition keeps the general structure of the earlier edition while replacing many of the essays and excerpts with more recent scholarship. The selection focuses on the German historical background to Nazism, the social and political forces that contributed to the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, the role of Adolf Hitler, and the institutions and machinery of the Nazi state.
