Updated on February 12, 2026: This has been sold.

Full title: Thrilling Adventures of Daniel Ellis by Daniel Ellis. Published in New York by Harper & Bros. in 1867. First edition. 430pp.

A rare first edition of Union Army captain Daniel Ellis’s Civil War memoir.

Ellis, known as the “Tennessee Scout,” recounts his experiences guiding Unionists through the Appalachian Mountains. Long regarded as one of the most vivid accounts of the war in Appalachia, the book offers detailed descriptions of the hardships and divided loyalties in East Tennessee. While later historians have noted that some episodes appear exaggerated, the narrative remains an important source for understanding the region’s turmoil during the war.

This first edition includes numerous full-page engravings illustrating key moments from Ellis’s service, as well as the full-page map of the Kentucky–Tennessee border.
