From NPS.gov:

"David G. Farragut (1801-1870) was an officer in the US Navy during the American Civil War. He is renowned for liberating New Orleans and eventually securing Mobile Bay, a seaport in the Gulf of Mexico, for the United States. Farragut began his life as a sailor in the US Navy at the young age of 9. By the time of the American Civil War, Farragut had already proven himself repeatedly in the military. Although he grew up in the south, Farragut chose to fight with the United States during the Civil War. Farragut was the first naval officer to be promoted to the rank of full admiral."
