Foreword:
Three hundred years ago Daniel Denton, one of the first settlers of the town of Jamaica in Queens County on Long Island, wrote a small tract entitled A Brief Description of New-York, "which had lately been reduced to his Majesties obedience."
Published in London in 1670, this was the first printed description in English of what is now one of the most populous areas of the world.
Denton's stated aim was to provide information on the new English colony "for the encouragement of many that have a desire to remove themselves," and "for the satisfaction of others that would make a trade thither."
No one knows what effect Denton's glowing description of life in New York had on the migration of Anglo-Saxons to America, but his book has become a collector's rarity. For many years it was believed that there were only two copies of the original in existence, but now as many as 21 copies have been located in prestigious libraries and private collections in the United States and England.
Denton's small book is a remarkable chronicle of the manners and customs of colonists from many nations and Indians living together, trading in furs and commodities, in a pastoral-like setting.
In excellent condition and in it's original slipcase.
