1876 Centennial Commemorative Medal — “These United Colonies Are Free and Independent States”

Struck for the nation’s Centennial and authorized by the Act of Congress on June 1874, this bronze medal celebrates the 100th anniversary of American independence.
On one side, a female figure representing the United Colonies kneels with a sword in her right hand and points to a constellation of thirteen stars, symbolizing the original states. With the text:
“These United Colonies Are, and of Right Ought to Be, Free and Independent States.” 1776.
On the opposite side, America, shown as a Liberty figure wearing the Phrygian cap, crowns Manufactures and Arts with laurel wreaths. She stands with the U.S. shield at her side. With the text:
“In Commemoration of the Hundredth Anniversary of American Independence. Act of Congress June 1874.” 1876.
