Original 1917 WWI Poster — "America Calls - Enlist In The Navy" — 42.75" x 30" — Framed

Original 1917 WWI Poster — "America Calls - Enlist In The Navy" — 42.75" x 30" — Framed

Updated on October 25, 2025: This has been sold.

Printed in 1917, we believe, for recruitment into The Great War, which the United States joined on April 6, 1917.  Depicts Liberty shaking the hand of a sailor who is holding a rifle with a bayonet. That illustration is from JC Leyendecker. (More on the artist below.)

Marked as "Printed by the U.S. Navy Publicity Bureau, 318 W. 39th St., N.Y." and "The U.S. Navy Publicity Bureau gratefully acknowledges its indebtedness to Mr. J.C. Leyendecker for this design and to the Beck Engraving Co. for the reproduction."

There are some small tears around the sides and it's priced accordingly. If you wish to have this completely restored and made like new, I'll be happy to recommend some companies that specialize in posters.  However, if it were me, I'd hang it and enjoy it exactly as it is.

The artist, Joseph C. Leyendecker

From Wikipedia

"Joseph Christian Leyendecker (March 23, 1874 – July 25, 1951) was one of the most prominent and financially successful freelance commercial artists in the United States. He was active between 1895 and 1951 producing drawings and paintings for hundreds of posters, books, advertisements, and magazine covers and stories.

"He is best known for his 80 covers for Collier's Weekly, 322 covers for The Saturday Evening Post, and advertising illustrations for B. Kuppenheimer men's clothing and Arrow brand shirts and detachable collars. He was one of the few known reportedly gay artists working in the early-twentieth century United States."
