Presidential Commission signed by President William McKinley and Russel A. Alger, Secretary of War, appointing Alexander D.B. Smead as Captain of the Volunteer Signal Corps effective June 2, 1898.
Alexander D. B. Smead entered the military service as second lieutenant, Third Cavalry, in 1868. He was promoted to be first lieutenant, same regiment on May 5, 1871, and resigned February 29, 1880, after fifteen months’ leave of absence which had been granted him for the purpose of taking up the profession of law.
In June 2, 1898, he was appointed captain of the United States Volunteer Signal Corps, and was honorably discharged as such December 5, 1898. He served for a time in Cuba after the close of the Santiago campaign.
