The series published, in 1964 by the Naval History Division, is one of the most important documentary collections ever assembled on the Revolutionary War at sea. Spanning more than 16,000 pages across thirteen volumes, the series preserves the authentic voices of the Revolution through letters, diaries, ships’ logs, official reports, muster rolls, petitions, newspaper accounts, and firsthand correspondence from the era.

The volumes bring together perspectives from American, British, French, and Spanish participants and include not only naval and military officers, but also common sailors, civilians, women, enslaved people, and political leaders. Rather than offering a modern retelling of events, the series presents the Revolution as it unfolded in real time through the words of those who experienced it.

We have two volumes covering periods of 1776 and 1777 and both are in excellent condition:

  • Volume 6 — American Theater: Aug. 1, 1776–Oct. 31, 1776; European Theater: May 26, 1776–Oct. 5, 1776.

Edited by William James Morgan and published by the Naval History Division, Department of the Navy, Washington, 1972. Includes a foreword by President Richard Nixon and an introduction by Vice Admiral Edwin B. Hooper, USN (Ret.), Director of Naval History.

1,641 pages, with several tables, maps, and illustrations.

You can also find a PDF copy of the book here.

  • Volume 9 — American Theater: June 1, 1777–July 31, 1777; European Theater: June 1, 1777–Sept. 30, 1777; American Theater: Aug. 1, 1777–Sept. 30, 1777.

Edited by William James Morgan and published by the Naval Historical Center, Department of the Navy, Washington, 1986. Includes a foreword by President Ronald Reagan and an introduction by Rear Admiral John D. H. Kane, Jr., USN (Ret.), Director of Naval History.

1,147 pages, with several tables, maps, and illustrations.

You can also find a PDF copy of the book here.
