Large Wedgwood creamware punch bowl in the Philadelphia" design was a First Edition commemorative piece made exclusively for the John Wanamaker department store in Philadelphia.
Made in the traditional Queensware style, the bowl features a deep form with a lobed scalloped rim and low footed base. Decorated throughout in black transferware, it presents a series of historic Philadelphia landmarks and Revolutionary-era scenes.
At the center of the interior is an American eagle holding a flag and bundle of arrows. Surrounding the interior and exterior are views including:
- Independence Hall
- Carpenter’s Hall
- Betsy Ross House
- Christ Church
- Elfreth’s Alley
- Washington’s Headquarters at Valley Forge
- Radnor Meeting House at Ithan
- East Prospect of Philadelphia from the Jersey Shore, circa 1753
On the bottom of the bowl, it shows the pattern name, "Philadelphia," along with a Wedgwood Studios crest and this text:
“Made exclusively for John Wanamaker”
