The New South, published in Port Royal, South Carolina in December 27, 1862

One of the first occupation newspapers published by Union forces in occupied Confederate territories. 

This issue details the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia.

There is also a front page headline and long report on the mass hanging of the 38 Sioux Indians at Mankato, Minnesota in the aftermath of the Dakota War of 1862, or Sioux Uprising.

The Port Royal New South was published between 1862-1867, witnessing the political and social changes transforming Beaufort County, SC during and after the war.
