Full title: The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. Published by the Princeton University Press in several volumes.

These are part of an ongoing project at Princeton that, when finished, is expected to total 60 volumes.  We have seven volumes and they are fascinating to browse through as you see Jefferson interact with the notable individuals and also the unknowns (today) of his day. Each volume is 600 - 700 pp and we are selling the seven volumes as a set.

Volumes available:

  • Volume 11 (1787): Covers the period from 1 January to 6 August 1787, continues the account of Jefferson’s mission as minister to France. 752 pp.

  • Volume 12 (1787 - 1788): Begins in the early part of August 1787 and continues through the end of March 1788, a time when Jefferson, as minister to France, was continuing his persistent efforts not only to secure the enforcement of the favorable trade regulations (especially for tobacco) already conceded to the United States but also to widen their scope to other imports from America.

  • Volume 13 (1788): Begins at the end of March 1788, when Jefferson and Adams were still in Amsterdam carrying on negotiations with the Dutch bankers for a loan to carry the national debt until the new government could be firmly established under the proposed Constitution, and concludes on 7 October 1788.

  • Volume 14 (1788 - 1789): From October 1788 through March 1789, continues and almost completes Jefferson’s stay in France as American minister there, and includes documents throwing light on the critical days of the eve of the French Revolution.

  • Volume 15 (1789): Jefferson, a veteran of the councils of his own country’s revolution, becomes an eyewitness of the opening events of the great upheaval in France in 1789.

  • Volume 18 (November 1790 - March 1791): Covering part of the final session of the First Congress, shows Jefferson as Secretary of State continuing his effective collaboration with James Madison in seeking commercial reciprocity with Great Britain by threatening—and almost achieving—a retaliatory navigation bill.

  • Volume 23 (1 January to 31 May 1792): The documents in this volume deal with an unusually active, dramatic period during Thomas Jefferson’s tenure as Secretary of State. They reveal for the first time the full extent of his role in securing Senate confirmation of Washington’s controversial nominees as ministers to France, Great Britain, and the Netherlands.

  • Volume 34 (May 1801 - July 1801): Covering May through July 1801, the story of Thomas Jefferson’s first presidential administration continues to unfold.
