The Bureau of American Ethnology was a research unit of the Smithsonian Institution that produced annual reports from 1879 to 1965 that contained detailed anthropological and ethnographic studies of Native American tribes.

The books, according to the Smithsonian Libraries:

    • First annual report — 1879 - 1880: Contains significant research on Native American sign languages and pictographsincluding John Wesley Powell's "Introduction to the Study of Indian Languages," Garrick Mallery's extensive work on "Sign Language Among North American Indians Compared With That Among Other Peoples and Deaf-Mutes" and documentation of the bureau's initial organizational structure and research methodology. 477 pp.

    • Second annual report — 1880 - 1881: Contains several significant anthropological studies, with major focus on mythology, burial practices, and Native American art. 603 pp.

    • Twenty-first annual report — 1899 - 1900: Contains extensive research focused particularly on the Hopi, including Jesse Walter Fewkes's "Hopi Katcinas" with a detailed ethnographic study of Hopi ceremonial figures known as katcinas (or kachinas). 360 pp.
