About the painting
General George Washington at Trenton is a large, full-length oil portrait painted in 1792 by American artist John Trumbull.
It depicts General Washington in Trenton, New Jersey, on the night of January 2, 1777, during the American Revolutionary War.
This was the evening following the Battle of the Assunpink Creek (also called the Second Battle of Trenton) and the night before Washington's decisive victory at the Battle of Princeton.
Trumbull considered this portrait to be "the best certainly of those which I painted."
The work is displayed at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut, where it was donated by the Society of the Cincinnati in Connecticut in 1806.
Although originally commissioned by the city of Charleston, South Carolina, the city rejected it, prompting Trumbull to create a second version.
